Women And Sexism Essays - Sexism, Discrimination, Gender Equality

Ladies and Sexism Ladies and Sexism We [women] are, as a sex, vastly unrivaled to men. Elizabeth Stanton (unmistakable lady suffragist) - (excerpted from One Woman, One Vote by Wheeler, pg. 58) Feebleness, thy name is lady. William Shakespeare - (excerpted from Hamlet, Act I, scene 2) This statement made by Stanton in 1890 shows huge numbers of the feministic convictions held by the ladies of today. What's more, the statement made by Shakespeare holds huge numbers of similar contemplations shared by men. The clash of the genders is predominant all over the place and is pertinent to anything. From sports to the military, people battle to beat the other, be that as it may, I see it as especially found in the work environment. People are amazingly serious with occupations, and men feel better than ladies. They [men] realize the insights are progressively good for them and they would like to keep it that way. On the off chance that this is valid, at that point how do ladies and men share the world together without war between one another? I accept that for the two sides to keep this from happening, they overlook a considerable lot of the distinctions. Numerous ladies decide not to see the measurements or they do not give it a second thought and acknowledge that men are more fruitful than ladies are. The story Stories Out of Medical School, composed by Adriane Fugh-Berman, which is an account about a lady that decided not to disregard the distinctions that confronted her, demonstrates another side to the shallow agreement. Fugh-Berman faces sexism and separation at Georgetown Medical School where ladies are the minority. She sees the different instances of sexism from her life systems educators to the Academic Senior members. There were classes that were just offered to men, and when she attempted to change that the entire course was required to be postponed. This obviously caused outrageous strain between the men and the ladies of this class. Because you can't take this course, for what reason would you like to demolish it for the remainder of us? was one of the remarks made by one of her male cohorts. Subliminally this man doesn't need this lady to succeed. Her cohorts that are ladies what's more, are not annoyed by the sexism additionally stun her. Regarding this a cohort expressed, Gracious, they're simply old fashioned. (alluding to the specialists that disregarded the ladies understudies) This record shows the miserable truth that a few ladies are glad to acknowledge sexism and segregation. For the ladies that don't, there is a long battle ahead. Many don't make it as far as possible, or they feel worn out on the weights put upon them. For instance, Shannon Faulkner who wished to turn into the primary lady in the Citadel was derided, scorned and annoyed until she pulled back. What's more, for what reason wouldn't the men of the Citadel need to see a kindred individual where they take so much pride? The way that she is a she and they don't care for that a lady would be on a similar level. Hilary Clinton is one more case of a lady put down for being in charge. The sensationalist newspapers and papers tore Hilary separated for attempting to assume control over the President's activity. For what reason would it trouble them that she may have been assisting the economy? When gain, the president is a man, and there is no requirement for a lady to help. Indeed, even in my own ordinary encounters sexism is all over the place. What's more, unfortunately enough, it is acknowledged all over. In recreational books ladies assume inactive jobs, in motion pictures and even TV sitcoms. For instance in the sitcom Dharma and Greg, which is about a youthful hitched couple, the man is an effective legal counselor from an affluent family, while Dharma is a charming minimal blonde that splits jokes. My own beau will make zingers of how after he goes to clinical school and turns into a fruitful specialist he will accommodate me, and I won't need to do anything. Conversing with a few companions in the Wharton institute of business, I see more sexism than I suspected existed in the nineties. 78% of the Wharton students are men and they accept this is so in light of the fact that the business world needn't bother with ladies. In my age, there emerge the equivalent chauvinist convictions held hundreds of years back. It is startling to accept that men don't need ladies to succeed. It is more alarming to accept that ladies acknowledge this as sensible.

Ronald Reagan and the Limits of Hagiography - Literature Essay Samples

Dutch, A Memoir of Ronald Reagan was a puzzling book for some since it is a fictionalized account of Ronald Reagan’s life from the perspective of a secondary character that is a combination of the author and complete fiction. Even though Irving Stone wrote classic biographies using the same combination of facts and fiction for various historic persons like Sigmund Freud and Michelangelo, it still seems like a strange choice to take for an historical figure that was still alive. As thought-provoking as Morriss chosen format is, his insights do not fundamentally change the vision of Reagan that even a hasty overview of Reagans perceived strengths of leadership reveals. Edmund Morris was born in Kenya to South African parents and quickly moved to England. For a time he was a concert pianist and copywriter and by 1966, he immigrated to the United States with his wife. As an immigrant, he took to American history in a way that went beyond the official questions on the immigration form and he wrote his first book The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt in 1966. This is what would bring him to the attention of Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was so impressed by Morris that he allowed him access to write a biography. However, Morris despaired of finding an inner life for Ronald Reagan who was one of the most extroverted presidents of the 20th century. According to Morris: â€Å"Nobody around him understood him. I, every person I interviewed, almost without exception, eventually would say, You know, I could never really figure him out.’† (Stahl 2004). An analogy to Ronald Reagan might be Robin Williams who was always on to the point where it became hard to know where the real person began. Despairing of capturing Reagan’s inner life, Morris decided to make up a fictionalized version of himself (20 years older and born in America) as well as a radical leftist son and a sarcastic newspaper columnist. The main thesis of the book is that Ronald Reagan was a standard bearer of a new era and a great president, yet he was inscrutable. Since the book is written in the voice of a fictional character, the book can avoid the questions of objectivity. The book begins with Reagan at the Bitberg cemetery and the author telling us that â€Å"Reagan stood within the reach of presidential greatness. Time and again – never more courageously than this day – he had struggled against circumstance and bent it to his will† (p. 3). Throughout the book, the author is supporting the thesis with strange details that don’t necessarily seem to have much to do with Ronald Reagan either as a person or a president or even an actor. For the most part, Ronald Reagan is merely a strangely blank character. The strength of this approach is that it brings us a personal anecdotal way of talking about a person, but this can also become a weakness as the author inserts himself into the narrative in rather invasive ways. For example, the author looks at a picture of Reagan’s mother and father and states â€Å"I couldn’t take my eyes off Nelle’s breasts. Here was a young woman full of the milk of life, relaxedly half-naked in public† (p. 13). I am not certain why the author wants us to know that Reagan’s mother was a big-breasted woman to the point of being â€Å"full of milk† even if it is meant to contrast her young picture with her serious older self. In another place, the author is stating that â€Å"no better than a good high school player, Lieutenant Regan lacked the speed and toughness of his yardbird opponents. Yet there was an easy grace to his running, and his long shots† (p. 203). Again one feels like the author is wasting our time with a statement about how Ronald Reagan has an easy grace. The sources might be one of the most aggravating parts of the text since some of them are made up in order to give the illusion that the characters in the book – the ones that are encountering Ronald Reagan – are real people and not fictional constructions. This makes the book rather confusing since the mixture of fiction and non-fiction doesn’t really allow for much concrete beliefs. Ultimately the author’s thesis is rather uninspiring. Ronald Reagan was an important and game-changing president. Ronald Reagan had a great deal of charisma and an easy charm. These are not exactly revelations since Reagan sold America on a combination of radical fiscal and social conservatism in a way that made neither version of conservatism seem radical or incompatible. This is in sharp contrast to modern conservatism which is sharply split between social and fiscal with an increasingly angry Republican party unable to put forth a candidate charismatic enough to bring everyone together. The author states that Ronald Reagan is impossible to really know and while one can sympathize with the author attempting to write about a man that he obviously respected and admired in a dispassionate historical sense, the author brings nothing new to the table by spending an entire book telling us that Ronald Reagan was charismatic. Should Prostitution Be Legal Las Vegas - 1781 Words

My paper will present the debatable question, should prostitution be legal in Las Vegas? As I argue for the issue, the reader must know that there is a misconceived idea that the city of sins, Las Vegas, is home to legal prostitution. In contrary to popular belief, prostitution is not legal in Las Vegas; there are rural areas in Nevada where brothels are running and prostitution is condoned, but in the county of Clark, it is the opposite. Although it may not be true, legalizing prostitution can bring Las Vegas and the people who work in such a profession multiple benefits. Any person who resides in this city of lights is aware of the busy streets that are filled with prostitution occurring even though the law is against it. Whether it s the unkempt streetwalker or the high class escort, this seems to be a booming operation. There are obvious cons and pros to the topic, but in this case the positive outcomes seem to outweigh the negative elements. In order to present my position on the issue I will provide three main positive outcomes that result from legalizing prostitution. The first being that legalizing this activity can benefit the economy as it can become a great source of revenue for the state considering it would be a popular business in Las Vegas. The topic which will be discussed secondly is in defense to the people involved in this profession, whether it be the workers or those who seek the services. Commedia Dell’arte as the Foundation of Comedy free essay sample

The consensus by many scholars today that Commedia dell’Arte is the basic foundation of all comedy is agreeable because majority if not all of the modern television shows are modeled after Commedia dell’Arte. Commedia dell’Arte translates, as â€Å"comedy of skills† is style of theater characterized by improvisation by the actors drawing from only scenarios. The origins of Commedia dell’Arte could be traced to its birthplace in Italy during the sixteenth century when it remained popular until mid-eighteenth century (Rudlin, 2003). To illustrate that the influence of Commedia dell’Arte is still prevalent, I will discuss specific characteristics of the characters and production style commonly associated with Commedia dell’Arte found in examples from the television show â€Å"Family Guy† and Goldoni’s play â€Å"A Servant of Two Masters† where the similarities to Commedia dell’Arte overlap. The characters of Commedia dell’Arte usually represent fixed social types. It has three main stock roles: servant/zanni, master, and lovers/innamorati (Katritzky, 2006). We will write a custom essay sample on Commedia Dell’arte as the Foundation of Comedy or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Rudlin (2003) maintains that the characters themselves are often referred to as masks, which, cannot be separated from the character. These characters, whose roles, characteristics, and costumes were well defined and widely known where often instantly recognized from their dressing and character traits to their expectations. In A Servant of Two Masters, some of these stock characters included Servants (Truffaldino Smeraldina), Lovers (Silvio Clarice, Beatrice Florindo). While in Family Guy, the cartoons always look Commedia dell’Arte; the masks are like caricatures of the types of people in our communities. The lovers could be the children (Meg, Chris and Stewie), who are concerned with things like school, love and peer pressure. Brian, the dog could pass for a servant/zani with Lois and Peter as the Masters. This stereotyping of characters made it enjoyable and exciting for the audience to associate with the particular characters, a characteristic that has not been lost since the commedia days. Commedia dell’Arte highly depended on improvisation especially from the actors, who where expected to use jokes and stock physical gags to excite the audience. An advantage of this was, since the productions were improvised, dialogue and action could easily be changed to satirize local scandals, current events, or regional tastes, while still using old jokes and punch lines. As such, the performances often were based on scenarios that gave some semblance of plot to the largely improvised format. Family Guy is famous for such plot lines, the numerous cut away gags and literally targeting every subject under the sun. For example, several times, Stewie’s elaborate and complex plans to finish off his mother never come to fruit and she instead carries him off. Peter also commonly makes practical jokes and often will cut off to a completely unrelated part of the story line, such as fighting a chicken or a story about his relative. That is some hilarious stuff. Mean while in A Servant of Two Masters, the scenarios are designed for improvisations from the actors. There are plots within plots and even subplots that cross paths and plans that always some how work or backfire on the initiators. Truffaldino, the main character of the play always carried a wooden sword, which he used for many zany bits and gags. He also seemed always hungry and in one hilarious scene, he attempts to serve his two masters dinner without being discovered and at the same time sneaks bites of the dinner for himself. In conclusion, although many elements of Commedia are seen in today’s television shows and theater, only two have been discussed in detail as shown above. From the characters to the performances of Commedia which lasted for over 200 years and elements where only improved or changed but it did not completely die off. The use of stock characters is still practiced today and so are the zany bits and gags as illustrated with the examples of A servant of Two Masters and Family Guy. While many other plays and television shows follow the basic Commedia style, these two examples are suitable to show and indicate that Commedia dell’Arte still rages on.

Macroeconomics Final Paper free essay sample

All economic indicators point to the fact that the United States has been in a recession for at least a year now. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time (as defined by Gregory Mankiw in his textbook, â€Å"Brief Principles of Macroeconomics†) clearly indicates that the U. S. economy has entered a recession. Consistent with the past three recessions in the U. S. (early 80’s, early 90’s, and 2001-2003), the Real GDP’s growth rate has become increasingly volatile over the past five quarters. In fact, per the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the GDP has contracted in two of the past four quarters. According to the BEA’s Table 1. 1. 1 – Percent Change from Preceding Period in Real GDP, the only other times in the past 30 years when the real GDP decreased in two of any given four consecutive quarters was during the aforementioned recessions. S. production is also shrinking†¦something that occurs during a recession. The nation’s cost of living is largely measured by the consumer prices index (CPI), the overall cost of the goods and services bought by a typical consumer. A rising CPI indicates that people are paying more for the things they are buying. Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) website, the CPI is the most widely used measure of inflation. Inflation tends to fall during time of economic hardship due to the fact that there are fewer injections of money into a struggling economy, and less money means less inflation. According to the BLS, for the 12 month period ending December 2008, the CPI rose . %, the smallest calendar increase since a . 7% decrease in 1954, indicating that money is not being loaned and â€Å"created. † When money is not being loaned or changing hands, an economy is struggling. The unemployment rate is also an indicator of our nation’s economic wellbeing, or lack thereof. Unemployment is also measured by the BLS. It is considered a lagging ind icator of the economy, meaning that the unemployment rate will not reflect a recession or economic boon until such time that the event has already started (or completed, depending on the duration of the event). This is because employers do not generally layoff workers at the first sign of an economic downturn nor do they instantly hire more workers when the economy starts to recover. BLS statistics show the unemployment rate in December 2008 to be 7. 2%, a 2. 3% rise over the 4. 9% unemployment rate in December 2007. The unemployment rate had remained relatively stable during 2006 and 2007, hovering in the 4. 5%-5. 0% range. So, this rapid rise in unemployment confirms the nation is facing serious economic problems. As discussed earlier, the GDP and CPI indicate that our economy has been in a recession since December 2007. And upon closer study, the 2008 monthly unemployment rates do not start to steeply incline above the 5% threshold until May 2008, a few months after the start of the recession. This is consistent with unemployment being a lagging indicator of the economy. The Federal Reserve uses Open Market Operations, the purchase and sale of U. S. government bonds, to affect the Federal Funds Interest Rate. The current Fed Funds Rate, the rate at which banks can make short-term loans (typically overnight) to each other, has been cut to . 25%. This is the lowest since the Fed started publishing the funds target in 1990. To get the rate this low, the Fed’s bond traders buy government bonds, thus increasing the money supply and the aggregate demand of goods and services. This is supposed to encourage individuals and companies to borrow and spend. As Dr. Gregory Mankiw describes in his New York Times article, â€Å"What Would Keynes Have Done,† low interest rates also â€Å"bolster equity values and, by encouraging international capital to look elsewhere, reduce the value of the dollar in foreign markets. As a result, low interest rates increase spending on consumption and investments, in addition to increasing our nation’s net exports. (It should be noted that it will be very difficult to greatly increase exports presently because the world economy is struggling, not just ours. ) All of these things help strengthen the economy. If at some point in the future, it becomes prudent to raise the interest rat e, the Fed’s bond traders would then have to sell the government bonds, thus decreasing the money supply in the market and lowering the aggregate demand. With the U. S. economy currently in a recession, I do not recommend raising the interest rates in the short-term future. The good news is that reducing the Fed Funds Rate to historic lows has helped prevent the U. S. from slipping into a depression by allowing banks to continue to lend money to each other and keeping the nation’s money supply somewhat liquid. However, it appears that simply lowering the interest rate will not be the only cure for our economy. We have almost reached the point where the Fed Funds rates cannot fall any lower. The Fed and the U. S. government will have to take other measures to help pull us from this economic slide. Other options that have been used and need to continue to be considered: a)Putting hundreds of billions of dollars of new reserves into the private sector – As described by Robert Lucas in his 12/23/08 article â€Å"Bernanke is the Best Stimulus Right Now† from The Wall Street Journal, doing this gives investors relatively safe and liquid securities to buy for those who want to flee from the non-government issued and/or insured securities. Without these safer options provided by the Fed, when investors sold their current securities, they would most likely choose to save their money as cash, thus reducing spending and furthering the recession. b)Target long term interest rates – By staying committed to keeping interest low for a substantial period of time, the Fed can make banks feel more comfortable with lending to each other, thus keeping more liquid money in the market. c)The U. S. government can help stimulate the economy by choosing to finance substantial non-wasteful improvements to the nation’s infrastructure. By pumping dollars into the economy through government funded project, Washington creates jobs and in theory will stimulate spending by companies and individuals, thus helping the economy to recover. The catches are not to be wasteful with the spending during the recession and then to be fiscally responsible and cut back on government spending once the economy has recovered. Taking the actions described above will hopefully lessen the severity and duration of this current recession.
